Socrates Cafe Moderated Discussion

This meeting will be a moderated discussion (with no formal talk at the start). We’ll choose the topic together on the night and you’re invited to participate (or to sit back and enjoy the conversation, if that’s your preference). No homework or prior reading is necessary – just come prepared to be open-minded.

TRANSPORT: Train is highly recommended – with a very easy thirty second walk from the nearest station (once the traffic lights change). There is limited parking at the venue, but you must be a member of the Club to use them – contact the venue for details.

ARRIVAL: Enter the building and head straight up the stairs / escalator (unless you’ve used the Club parking). You will have to sign in as either a guest or become a member. You can become a member for the measly cost of $5. Once you’ve sorted that out, grab yourself a drink, and find us in the function room to the right of the sign-in table.

TOPIC: Everyone is welcome to suggest a topic – just write it down on the list when you arrive. Brevity is required – you must limit your topic to ten words or fewer, and please consider that one-word topics can make for excellent conversation. Please also try to leave assumptions out of the question (eg, do not ask “why do we think…” as it presumes that we all think the same way – which is highly unlikely!).

FOOD & DRINK: As we are getting the room for free, it would be great to support the club by buying a drink – they’re sold at club prices, which means they’re very cheap. You’re also invited to join us for dinner at the same venue afterwards – at around 8:30pm. Meals are also very affordable. I have asked that they provide for vegetarians/vegans, as this is not a standard on the menu, and they’re happy to do that.
