If you look at the history of intellectuals back to the earliest times, every society that I have ever heard of, the great mass of intellectuals tends to be subordinate to power. There is always a fringe of dissidents who are always treated pretty badly. How do you break out of it? You can from childhood on. You will be marginalised, vilified; life will be harder for you compared to if you conform and follow the rules.
